Some call it Family Day, but in the beautiful east coast province of Nova Scotia we call it Heritage Day. It’s the only statutory holiday in February and aims to give us all a chance to take a much needed break in the thick of winter. Adding a bit of history to the mix allows us to reflect on what it means to be Canadian and celebrate the extraordinary achievements and contributions of those who have walked these shores before us.
This year we are honouring a beautiful and brave woman named Mona Parsons. She was born in Middelton, NS on February 17th, 1901. An Acadia University Drama Graduate and aspiring actress, she tried to make it big in the big apple only to abandon that dream to come home to care for her ailing mother. Those acting skills were much later put to good use as a member of the resistance against the Nazis in war torn Europe….intrigued, you should be.
Hers is a story of bravery and honour and a commitment to her native land. To read more about this incredible Canadian please click here.
